The statement you cited would indeed imply that, but that statement applies only to the first part of the post. Later in the post, at the end, it is said, that when she reached mirkwood, she "winged her way lower over the dense trees...." which would mean she was now easier to see. She was obviously not trying so hard anymore to not be visible. Second, in my post, Calion was looking around at the environment, and at such an alert state, he would easily notice strange noises and sudden movements. And once his attention shifts to the sky, the others are soon to follow

Just my two cents before posting, but:
I know we've been doing this for several weeks now, but I was pretty sure it was still night in the story, seeing as we're supposed to be gone by dawn and realistically not all that much time has passed in the story :}
As for the Elthoron (better than trying to get away with Thorongil :}) I too got the impression it was trying to be hard to see, but I'll reread the post before giving my own.
Edit: I posted :} It was tempting to say "Auros placed his hand on the horse's mane and threw himself up under the neck over onto its back" but I decided that was more of a Mirkwood Elf (*cough* Legolas *cough*) thing :}
Take care :} Eonwë

lol!
I thought it was night too, reason for grabbing the horses before the marshmallow roast. Can we just say it's night anyway?

Uhm... night? I was, and still am, convinced that it was about mid-afternoon. I have just looked at the first page of the thread, and the first part of the first sentence of the first post was: "Morning sunlight still held," posted by Varda. That was when she was nearing the gate.
I, in turn, reacted to that, by stating it was morning in my first post, and in the second post that my horse reached the Gate in a few hours.
Now, how many hours do you guys think have gone by since that time? I do not think it was that long, that it would be night by now. Therefore, Helvy woke up in the sunlight... please prove me wrong, and I will edit my post.

I love a challenge! It’s easy to lose track of time in the game over 6 pages of posts and weeks of real life. Here are your proofs, and it may be a help to us all.
Fainan: 1st post (Begins) Morning sunlight still held, although the clouds suggested later rain. Cautiously, I kept my mare to a trot, although she wanted a good run. (I’m coming from near the palace after being given orders and the post shows some travel.)
I settled on a low-hanging branch near the road, good to watch for the incoming Noldo. It was a good time to work on making a fresh batch of arrows, so I set to work with my rather basic fletching kit.
Auros: post #4 With a sigh, Auros looked his mount in the eye. "Well, my four-legged friend, tonight we make the Forest Gate, one way or the other."
Fainan: post #8 Fainan sat up straighter at the sound of hoofbeats, glad of any excuse to no longer bend over the now large pile of freshly made arrows. (The arrow pile is meant to show the passing of the day, takes time to make them. Calion approaches after a rough journey, part of which is made unconscious. I made a mistake saying he was soggy, as by that time he would probably be merely damp. Call it an exaggeration by Fainan.)
Haran: post #9 The sun was now beginning to fade as he approached the gates to the elven woods.
Fainan: post #10 Sure, and the sun would rise in the west tomorrow too. (Not so clear a reference here.)
Calion: post #11 One of them was a large breathing, so loud and un-Elvish, they could have killed him in the dark. (Not actually a proof, but added to the idea of night. Nice Haldir ref.)
Calion: post #16 Calion slowly left the shadows of the gate, his bright-green eyes glowing in the light of the gate-lanterns.
Eonwe: post #19 It was evening as Auros drew within sight of his goal.
Eonwe: post #29 In the moonlight he could see a white cloth wrapped around the Dwarf's leg.
Eonwe: post #32 I deem you are my guides through your land, and we must leave at dawn. The Dwarf may still be weak come morning, so he will have to ride with us.
Eonwe: post#37 He could see the wolves' eyes glittering in the moonlight.
Eonwe: post#53 We will be leaving before dawn."
Fainan: post #63 We need to be able to leave immediately once the fire starts. It is still night.
Elwing: post #82 Approaching the forest, she winged her way lower over the dense trees, her sight nearly as sharp at night, almost rivaling that of the nightbirds. There seemed to be some commotion around a gate, and...Howlers!

Night should not be a problem for our vision. All of us except perhaps the human should have decent low-light sight, and she might have a magical enhancement. We also have moonlight.
Fainan isn't quite as educated on some things as the rest of you and doesn't know what that elthoron is, not generally seen around Mirkwood.
Fainan's not trying to go a long distance, just out of range of the fun effects of a night fire in Mirkwood. We are safe on the path, but it's narrow and winding.

I'm really surprised either of the Mirkwood Elves would know about such a rare bird, but then, I suppose Calion's knowledge can be explained by his background as a member of Thranduil's court.
Although, I don't believe it was Elwing's intention to have her race of Eagles as a descendant of Luthien :} Not sure how you meant that, Pharazon, as an actual part of the truth or a piece of misunderstood legend arisen after time (last one may be a good excuse to have it, though :})
Living in Rivendell is a good excuse to know just about anything, hehe :}

Varda: Yes, you are right. I will change my post... he will wake up to see stars instead. Eonwe: My knowledge of the bird is both from me being from Thranduil's court, like you said, and also from being interested in all sorts of animals and their lore. Also, I actually meant my mentioning of Luthien as a bit of the truth. The first of the Elthoron were hatched by Elwing. I interpreted this as them being, by Elwing, descendants of Luthien as well, and as Luthien was more famous among woodelves than Elwing, I assume, I thought a reference to Luthien and her magnificent beauty could fit here. It was not meant as a misunderstood part of the legend And, all of you: it seems I am addressed by almost everyone of you, and therefore I will now place my post.

Greetings, all! It takes me awhile to get around since I don't do this so often, so I just discovered this discussion board To give some feedback on some of the comments on my character (I hope you find helpful): the elthoron "origin" is their own legend...I was deliberately ambiguous in saying Elwing "hatched" them so it could be either as in born (since she could become a bird) or as in given to her for incubation and raising. In saying a person would be surprised to see one of the mini-eagles, it is because they are rare, not because they are shy. In picking the name, I wasn't really trying for "cutesy" although I guess it does come across that way (I have tried to remedy that in my latest story post)...there was a reason for her name choice that might make a suitable little "campfire story" at some point in the big story Thanks for patience... Elwing ps This is fun!

Thanks for clearing that up Elwing :} That helps a bit, as Calion and Auros no doubt have different sources of lore on the subject :}
"Nimel" would be "white star" if I recall. Nice Elvish name :}
Ooh campfire story,.. I'll bring the marshmallows :} (Oh wait, Auros didn't bring marshmallows... darn)
Take care :}

Glad to help. Have an "aside" for you (nothing to do with story) I though you all might enjoy. Concerns a TV show (I admit I'm TV addict )..."ER" which comes on Thur night in my area. Situation: a lady dr-in-training is crosstraining by heading a group therapy talk session. When done, she converses as follows with regular dr in charge (I'll quote as close as I can remember) : (she) "Is it always like this?" (he) "That was nothing. We used to have a staff member who had to speak fluent Klingon." (she) "You're kidding!" (he) "I'm serious! And recently we hired someone fulltime who's into elvish. (mumbled) Thank you, Mr. Tolkien." LOL - I loved it! Hope you got a ;D too. Elwing

Well, good folks, seems I'm out of the story now. At least it's a good "out" (i.e. not getting killed off) so I could re-enter at some future appropriate point. This has been a very interesting teamwork effort (the writing that is) - trying to anticipate what others might do/say so that what I did/said would blend in instead of contradicting. I will try to keep up on the reading even while I am not a character (well, actually, I've been told I am always something of a "character" but I don't think it's the same thing ). Namarie, Elwing

Dusksinger is going her own ways. This last post for now moves her in another direction allowing me to take up at some later point while the rest of you can go on. If I get time I also will be able to write without having to follow up on ½ a million things you may be doing
