Happy 18th Anniversary! Thank you to all that have contributed to the long life of the guild whether you have a weathered patina or are new and shiny. Have fun shooting off random fireworks and even doing flash mobs to shoot them in various towns. We can mail mathoms or pies in-game to fellow Valarites. Feel free to email Varda with your original Tolkien-inspired work (art, poetry, stories, articles, etc) maybe Valar-related, to have it published with a special Anniversary mention. The AIM chat marathon is running from Oct 4 to the next Sunday meeting on Oct 11. Come help us hold the channel open as a pillar of the community. You can even say hi on this thread! Here's a link to the 2015 Anniversary page: valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2015/Anniv2015/anniv18th.htm/cheers Varda

Fainan:
"If I may be so bold, Lord Elrond, perhaps one of those tasks might be sending our group out to hunt that sorcerer menacing Mirkwood and all the area? Little more research can we do, and the scouting seems done. What say you?"

Fainan:
"Thank you for letting us borrow Meren," Fainan said with a smile to the other lore-masters. Outside in the hallway with her friends, she said, "We heard Frali was already headed over to see Elrond and hoped to spot him on the way. Maybe he can meet us there."
Yet they did not see the doughty dwarf anywhere along the way. Fainan knocked on Elrond's study door, even though the guard seemed not to care about their presence. Inside, they found Frali at last, already in conference. "Mae govannen, Lord Elrond, Master dwarf. Calion has received tidings from his feathered scouts that we thought should be passed to you."

Fainan:
Fainan and Calion entered the Hall of Fire and found Meren deep in discussion with other lore-masters. Fainan waited next to them, long enough to give their companion a chance to notice them and look up. As soon as the group went quiet, Fainan said, "Pardon me, Meren. Could you join us for a few minutes? We're going to try to visit Lord Elrond."

Fainan:
Fishing for bluegill perch to use as bait for something better for the constantly needy Rivendell tables, Fainan had enough for a start. Spotting Calion walking along the beach, she pulled in her hook to go chat with him. Maybe he would like a turn at the pole? Then birds fluttered in, and she listened eagerly on her way to Calion. Trolls! Lots of them! O great. At least she had a good use for some of the bait now, and gave it to those birds that would find it interesting.
"Quite the news, Calion! Sounds as if we won't be bored."

Fainan:
Fishing at the river on the border of Rivendell, Fainan realized something shocking. The landscape and even the air no longer blasted her with color, looking beautiful. An impression had even crossed her mind that someday, once the Enemy was somehow destroyed, Mirkwood might have bright colors as well. Deeper thoughts fled as a fish took the hook.

The Roving Threats have been a fun addition for raiding for level 100's or near to that level. The quests may be picked up in Eriador in Angmar in a tent near the reflecting pool, Forochel not far from the stable at Suri-kyla, Misty Mountains near Gloin's first camp by the task board. The Epilogue baddie is marked . The Gondor hub can be picked up in West Gondor at Dol Amroth nearish the stairs from Aelnir, and Central Gondor at each of the three main stable towns. Reputation is needed. The Threats aren't currently marked on the map so here's a link that helps find them, from the Department of Strategy: www.departmentofstrategery.com/lotro/guides/roving-threats-of-update-15-2/

Fainan:
Under the porch of the Last Homely House, the daylight seemed less over-bright. Still, the colors no longer felt so garish and the woods about seemed nearer natural; the last thing she needed, however, was to become used to what were called pleasant and normal surroundings that were actually only a very short interlude in reality. Another kind of light told her which way to head in the maze of halls, and she followed the mental brilliance towards Lord Elrond. She noticed movement as Noldor passed along information of her whereabouts; at least they kept the security nearly invisible to add to the feeling of homey surroundings. As she started to knock, the door to the study opened on oiled hinges.
"Welcome," Erestor said.
"Thank you. May I speak with Lord Elrond?
From a map-covered table to one side, a voice called, "You may. Come join me. And Erestor, could you have wine and cheese sent? This is hungry work."
"I don't know where he puts it all," Erestor pretended to grumble as he left.
Dark pushpins dotted the map, some that Fainan easily recognized as positions of the enemy. "Would one of those be our sorcerer?"
"His location is more of an estimate. Please feel free to look over this terrain map for what you plan to go through."
She memorized the areas they might have to travel as a painting in her mind. Still not enough detail, but handy for figuring potential routes. Lightly she said, "It looks to be a most unpleasant outing. Feasting along the way or fine inns will probably have to eliminated from the plans."
"Best not to be the feast either. Speaking of missing feats, you have been staying at the fringes of our wood. You know that you are welcome to join in the activities, including the stories and music at the Hall of Fire?"
"I have once, and it felt like a dream of Valinor. Unfortunately, my lord, I have an urgent need to follow after the threat to Mirkwood. The sorcerer will be deeply embedded in his lair before we can overtake him."
Elrond checked a small scrap of paper that must have been crushed inside a pouch for several days of riding and stabbed down a new pushpin blocking yet another path. "You were far enough behind so that you knew that would be true in any case. Is it not that which you have in a certain pouch one of your drives to leave? You brought it with you."
Startled, Fainan untied the pouch and let him inspect it.
Elrond raised his elegant eyebrows. "You planned to leave our sorcerer a present from home?"
"Even if we cannot reach him, he would then find problems closer at hand to distract him from Mirkwood. But I fear if this package sits too long, the present will be unwrapped far too soon."
"Did you notice the development seems to be arrested during this time that the gift is within Rivendell? It should last until you are ready."
Fainan's shoulders relaxed as they had not for days. "Thank you."
"How were you planning to find the recipient of this gift?"
"I have not the learning or the magic of the others on this trip, but do have a sensitivity to magic and its flavors that may lead me to him. For instance, around you, the mental sentries in the flets and even the beacons of distant Gondor seem to go off, yet in a happy way. There is another presence in or sometimes just outside the house that makes me want to hide as far away as possible, a prisoner of yours perhaps, of the nature that I intend to follow. If you had already captured our prey, you would mention it?"
"The dire presence you feel is of no danger to you here, and is not part of your hunt. I believe your sensitivity will indeed be of use, perhaps sooner than you expected. The information you seek will be coming at various times during this day."
"I shall be ready, my lord." She bowed and dodged smilingly around Erestor as he returned with the snack tray.

Hope: How is this idea handled in Tolkien's stories? There's a lot of fading and war and sadness, but there's always hope in there. How do we see this handled?
Feel free to use examples from any of the books, and this is open book. Have fun with the topic.

A toast to J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday January 3, 1892 on this day in 2015. "The Toast" is done thusly: at 9pm your local time, stand, say "The Professor", and take a drink of a beverage of your choice, non-alcoholic is fine. (We had soda.) In-game in LotRO, we used a beverage or the emote of /drink. Didn't make it? A late toast is still an honor to his memory. The tradition started with the Tolkien Society and has spread over time. www.tolkiensociety.org/events/tolkien-birthday-toast-2015/

If I should come back as just an Eye, that eye will not be set on a tower constructed by magic but one built on sound, mundane engineering principles by folk that are loyal to me.

While considering this list, I will not leave what's left of my smidgen of wraithy self where Manwe's wind can blow it apart again.
