Whole, apart, but kept together.

At last rejoined with master's heir
to face dread, shadow, darkness, and despair.

Reveal unto me the meaning of this riddle :}

I'll go with Narsil, bestowed to the line of Elendil who refused Sauron, it was broken but the shards were kept together. At the end of the third age it was made whole again and passed to Aragorn, heir of Elendil, its former master, with him facing the armies of Sauron.
