Eonwe's right. Fire another shot across the bows!
When memory refuses to serve or you just feel like enjoying some page-flipping, feel free to look in and even quote the Silmarillion. It's the LotR thread that is memory-only.

Emeldir the Manhearted, wife of Barahir, led the women and children away from Dorthonion, which had become well-nigh unlivable due to Morgoth's forces and enchantments.
She would have preferred to stay to fight by her husband and son (Beren), but this was the only way to preserve the people, and was so ordered by Barahir. She gave weapons and arms to those of the women and children who would bear them and they fought their way with much loss to Brethil. Some remained there with the Haladin, but the rest (including Rian and Morwen) traveled on over the mountains to Dor-Lomin and there stayed with the people of Galdor.

First to answer correctly gets to ask the next question. If no correct answer is forthcoming, the stumper is allowed to ask a new question. No stumping should occur because you may use the Silmarillion. Quotes are welcome especially if they include chapter references. Discussion is also welcome. A question list is intended to be maintained on this first post, including asker and answerer.
1. Who are the Valar? (Question by Varda)
2. Which two characters influential to the future of Middle-Earth crossed paths, without knowing it, at the Pools of Ivrin? (by Eonwe)
3. Thousands of years before Eowyn, a heroic woman distinguished herself in the Dagor Bragollach. Who was this woman and why is she famous? (by Ancalagon)
4. What group did the later kings of Numenor call the "Spies of the Valar"? (by Varda)
5. What did Beren name Luthien, and what does this name mean? (by Eonwe)
6. During his reign, the people of Numenor became divided into the King's Men and the smaller party of the Elendili (the Elf-friends). What was this king's name? (by Varda)
7. Under what name did Sauron approach the Elves of Eregion in the Second Age? (by Eonwe)
8. What did Beren use to cut the Silmaril from Morgoth's crown, and who made it (the thing, not the Silmaril)? (by Ancalagon)
9. Name the seven sons of FĂ«anor. (by Eonwe)
10. Who were the children of Hurin, and what were their ultimate fates? (by Ancalagon)
11. The Second and Third Kinslayings: Give the location for each Kinslaying, who attacked who, and what was the outcome (of these Kinslayings) for at least 9 of the following characters/items: The sons of Feanor (any of the 7 count as their own), Elwing, Dior, Nimloth, Dior's sons, Elrond, Elros, the Silmaril, the Nauglamir, and the Ring of Barahir? Good luck. The first to get 9 gets to ask the next question. (by Ar-Pharazon)
12. Turin ran away in guilt from the court of King Thingol who had adopted him. Why? Also looking for a name. (by Varda)
13. A riddle by Ancalagon on p.3 Child of Iluvatar I am, At Himring I dwelt, A hand I lost but twas naught, Amidst the burning rage I felt Upon myself a vow I took A curse I was bestowed Friend and foe alike I slew Thus my fate was sowed To fulfill my vow foresworn, I alone was doomed Into fire I took my prize, And by fire we were consumed.
Who am I?
14. What craft alone out of all crafts is it said the Dwarves were never outmatched? (by Eonwe)
15. What was the name of the black sword of turin; and who was its maker? (by Glorfindel)
16. What natural (or perhaps supernatural) wonders in the sky did Elwing and Earendil become? (by Varda)
17. Elrond and Elros hold a very diverse bloodline. List all the races of which they are apart in blood (for Elvish please be specific) as well as the names of their forefathers/mothers from whom each particular bloodline comes to them. Please be sure to indicate exactly how each person is connected to Elrond/Elros as opposed to just listing their names. (by Glorfindel)
18. Name 7 of Barahir's 12 companions with whom he wandered and hid from Morgoth's forces after the Dagor Bragollach. You get extra credit if you name more than 7, but 7 is enough for the next question. (by Ar-Pharazon)
19. Riddle by Ancalagon: Five I am numbered In name but not in truth All the parts of me belong to me But all of them alone are not my whole
My First is the crescent moon Waning in the darkling sky My Second is an individual Though a friend rides upon his shoulders My Third does roll in the mouth But never is it eaten or drunk My Fourth and Fifth lie together And together inside do they lie
Who/what am I?

28. At whose instigation were the two lamps of the Valar that preceded the Two Trees built, and for what purpose? (by Indis)
29. Who greeted Earendil when he came ashore in Aman? (by Eonwe)
30. Sauron killed Nimloth, the White Tree of Numenor not long before the Akallabeth. How did there come to be a White Tree in Middle Earth, when Nimloth had been destroyed? (by Indis)
31.

The Stone of Erech near the Paths of the Dead is where the Oathbreakers originally took their oath and where Aragorn gave them their chance to redeem it. The party followed by the Oathbreakers seemed to have to reach the Stone by a certain time before some dire consequence. *reaches for book and has to leave this thread*
