Calion:
After eyeing Auros for a brief moment, Calion gave a fleeting smile. "Thank you," he replied, and nodded slightly. "There may be hope yet, for him and for your friend. For their sake, we will do what we can."
With that, Calion continued walking to his room, possible scenarios playing through his mind.

Calion:
Giving a short, awkward bow while still in his seat, Calion spoke as well. "I too will join you on this mission. There is another of our kin who needs saving, if at all possible, and he is dear to my heart. I have been preparing for enough time now, familiarizing myself with the lands to the north, and their current condition for as much as the birds could tell me, as well as what knowledge I could find in the library concerning our enemy."
With that, his face went dark. He added, in a slightly lower voice, "I will do what is necessary, and not let myself be distracted by the shell he wears and from which we hope to drive him. But this is personal to me, and apart from my duties to Mirkwood, which would be enough reason to go up there, I would not sit by and abandon my brother to his current fate, nor allow his possessor to waylay you without my presence."

See them there, the company of three, resting beneath a fir-tree. They think they're safe, and set no watch; no stones thrown at me tonight. Their quest has just begun, and hope remains, upon their faces and in their dreams. I look at them, and wonder, what is their purpose, what is their importance? But even with my fabled cunning I cannot even guess... perhaps ignorance is bliss. Who/what am I?

Calion:
Elrond's summon found him after a short delay, as Calion was just returning from another short camping trip. He had not been present for the hammering sound, and wondered what had been going on that seemed to be the topic of conversation he occasionally heard around him, as he returned to his assigned guestroom to drop his gear.
After a quick wash and cleanup he thought himself dignified enough for even the taste of the Noldor, and went on to Elrond's room, pleased to note that the other parties were only just arriving themselves. Apparently the timing of the summon and meeting had been adjusted for his activities, or other preparations had to have been made.
Calion entered the room with the others, casting a quick, curious glance at Auros, who he had not seen around Rivendell for some time. But then, his own partial absence might also be to blame for that. Nodding respectfully to the host of the meeting, he sat down on one of the free seats, waiting for the news to come.

Calion:
He could've been ready to depart within a day or so from the meeting with Elrond, but that wasn't to be. Calion was no stranger to spending time in the halls of the mighty, but the semi-urban environment started to get to him when enough time passed. Spending more time in the library didn't help. He did have some genuine interest in where they would be going, and other topics besides, and Fainan's own determination made him feel he had to keep up. But there were only so many hours he could spend among the books before he had to take a break in the outside world.
So, he spent much of his time walking the lanes, communicating with the wildlife, and sometimes, when he thought nobody was looking, he would climb a tree, swing about a bit, and relax among the branches. It was good exercise, as well. On some days, he would join Fainan among the archers, but the targets were not really suited for dagger-throwing, and such activities would not last long. And two or three times, when he was really tired of being surrounded by the stone architecture, he would excuse himself, leave Rivendell, and camp out in the nearby wilds for a night or two, making sure not to go too far from the city, or too near orc territory. He did not want to leave himself vulnerable at such a critical time. It also gave him more challenging targets to keep his skills honed, like branches waving in the wind.
It was with some relief that Calion answered the summons by Legolas. He knew that things were moving along now. And when the prince announced his own departure, he knew the Angmar expedition would not be long behind. With a short bow, he gave his own well wishes to his old friend, adding the hope that the mission would go unnoticed as long as possible and that the world would fare better for its success.
When the time came for the nine walkers to leave, Calion stood to the side, nodding his head politely as Legolas walked by. After Legolas did the same in return, and the party moved on, he watched them go until they were out of sight, quite a distance for an elf. He then turned around and resumed his daily rounds, checking with the birds if there was any more news from the north.

Calion:
Calion gave Frali's suggestion some thought, but thought it unwise to venture out so close to the time when they would be leaving. It would not be a good idea to risk anyone getting lost or delayed before they moved out on their mission.
Out loud, he replied: "I don't think that will be necessary. I'm sure the city's scouts have a constant guard on their immediate borders, and if there's anything you want to know it should be easy to ask around somewhere. Also, it cannot be long now until Lord Elrond gives us leave, and we had best be rested and prepared. We probably won't remain here more than a few days longer."
Calion smiled at both his companions and added, "If there's anyone you'd like to speak to before we go, do not wait too long."

Calion:
Smiling, Calion also turned to Meren. He gave a quick bow and said: "You will indeed be missed, Lady Meren. But I see we could not drag you away from your new library if we wanted to. Indeed, even for an elf, it seems to me there is more than a person could read in a lifetime, and hopefully war will never trouble you on the steps of Rivendell for all that time. I had feared we might lose someone on our quest, but if it must be so, losing you to a handful of books is certainly one of the better scenarios."
He glanced at the map, continuing: "You know where we'll be going, if you find any more knowledge that might help us along the way. I will ask our feathered friends to check up on you now and then, and if you have a message, I'm sure they will let you pass a note. And of course, when we return to Mirkwood, we will inform your family of your decision, but hopefully we shall meet again before then."

Calion:
Bowing to Elrond, Calion said: "Yes, Lord Elrond, I imagine they will, if he is keen to join us further on our journey." After giving Frali a brief nod, he continued. "I do not know if my flying friends have seen the same things as your scouts, but they have told me about the area to the North of Rivendell in good detail. There appear to be few orcs about as of now, except for some patrols, but there are other dangers you will be more familiar with, such as trolls and spiders."
Looking around, Calion found a large and detailed map of the region on a wall in Elrond's study. "I studied a map like this in your library, and have been able to place locations the birds gave to me, in my head. If you don't mind, I could point things out on it, like orc patrols?" He then proceeded to point out patrols, paths, food sources, troll caves, and other things he had learned, on the map, hoping that they would prove useful in the planning of the journey, and that they were things Elrond did not already know.

Calion:
Knowing that there was nothing to do now for him but wait, Calion strolled along the river, trying to soak in what he could of the area before the party would resume the chase. In the distance he spotted someone familiar pulling on a fishing line, and he wondered what type of fish would be present around here. But before he had time to consider this further, or even to shout a greeting, a familiar sound caught his ear from the north. "So much for the wait", he mumbled.
The birds landed on some branches not far above Calion's head. They caught Fainan's attention too, but were eager and excited, and launched into their report without waiting for her to arrive. Calion listened attentively. There was no significant orc presence in the areas directly to the north. A few scouts and patrols, but no fixed abode could be found until they went further away from Rivendell, and those patrols could be easily avoided. However, there were more permanent residents to watch out for. Trolls, for a start. Trolls did not live in large communities, because it took more land and food to support them than the smaller races, but based on the troll caves the birds knew of, there could potentially be more trolls than orcs in the region. How many of the caves were occupied they could not say. Trolls did not get out during the day.
There were crebain high up, but the birds made a habit of staying out of their way. There were spiders as well, but not many, and smaller than their Mirkwood cousins. Yet they were large enough to pose a danger to the birds at least, who felt obliged to mention their presence for this reason. The birds also pointed out some rocky areas near streams of water that were a good source of food, but for all Calion knew that might just mean a snake or lizard colony or two. Still, they would do, if supplies ran low.
Besides the dangers ahead, the feathered scouts mentioned paths, passes, rivers, vegetation, fruits, and other features of the landscape and points of advice. Together with the maps found in Rivendell, there would be enough information to plan ahead for quite some time. Calion continued to listen and process the information while the birds chattered on.

When, over a week ago, I saw the cinematic for the new expansion, Warlords of Draenor, and the way it reaches back to the old Warcraft games and the novels, something ignited in me. A new interest in the lore. But before reviewing it from start to finish, I wanted to make a timeline of publication so I got all things in order. That's how it started; since then I've also added the major content patches for WoW because they add a lot of new lore, especially with their cinematic trailers. And I've also added Hearthstone, since it does give new lore content sometimes and is canon in the world of Azeroth itself. And whenever something new happens, I'll add it too Enjoy!
