Hail all! :}
As we all should know, there are many times in LotR when the Valar are referenced. The peoples of Middle-Earth knew about them, and even called to them for help. The Elves especially loved Elbereth (Varda), while hunters in Gondor may have called upon Araw(Oromë) to help them find a bounty of good meat.
In order to assist our members in Tolkien Role-play, I thought I would list character classes from World of Warcraft and their probable Patron/Matron Vala/Valië were they in Tolkien's universe. I encourage those in other RP games to list their classes and probable class patrons. Make sure you tell us which game too though :} And a reason why that's the patron would be good too. Vala names from both the Silmarillion and the Book of Lost Tales are free for use in this :}
[glow=blue,2,300]Paladin[/glow]- Manwë, Varda, or even both. As the Highest authority in Arda and the closest in mind to Eru, Manwë is a top choice. Manwë also "has no thought for his own honor," an aspect Paladins are also supposed to share. Varda is also a top choice because her power is in Light, and the Paladins in WC/Diablo serve "the Light." The Nazgul, undead creatures, certainly feared the name "Elbereth." Fionwë is a secondary choice, being their son.
[glow=blue,2,300]Warrior[/glow]- Tulkas, or Fionwë. It depends mostly on the type. Tulkas could generally be seen as the patron of all warriors, as he is known as Astaldo, the Valiant. He laughs even in battle, taking delight in wrestling and contests of strength. Fionwë can be seen as a top choice, specifically because warriors tend to wield weaponry rather than fight bare-handed. Fionwë is the mightiest in arms of all in Arda. Secondary choices would be Makar and Mëassa, two other warrior Valar.
[glow=blue,2,300]Hunter[/glow]- Oromë is the top choice for this class. He is the greatest hunter in Arda, having hunted Morgoth's beasts since before the Elves were born.
[glow=blue,2,300]Druid[/glow]- Yavanna is the top choice for a Druid. Her domain is nature. A second choice would be Vana for which "all flowers spring as she passes, and open if she glances upon them.."
[glow=blue,2,300]Priest[/glow]- There are really only two beings in Middle-Earth that have priests: Eru and Morgoth. The other Valar do not need nor desire worship, preferring all should worship Eru, the Creator of All. From the description of priests in WoW, however, it would seem the shadow of Morgoth is on even the priesthood of those who serve Eru, such that priests would manipulate others. It would take a mighty one to cleanse such a taint :}
[glow=blue,2,300]Mage, Warlock[/glow] These people would not normally serve good as none of the Valar except Morgoth have shown any sign of granting such power to the younger races. I suppose one could step back into BoLT as see where (I believe) there is a reference to the elf wizard Tuvo. However, as Elven (spiritual) nature and Human (spiritual) nature are different it is hard to find an actual patron other than Morgoth.
[glow=blue,2,300]Shaman[/glow] Morgoth, Namo. Shamans speak with spirits and have visions of the future. Although this loosely connects them with Namo, most spirits go to one of two destinations: Mandos or the Void. Unless by "spirits" we take it to mean "Maiar" rather than "ancestral spirits" which it is traditionally taken to mean, in which case Namo becomes the top choice of "good guys." Morgoth of course can send just as many spirits out to decieve and lie, so this is a fine line to walk for those who tread the path :} Where they get any control over the elements is still up in the air.
[glow=blue,2,300]Rogue[/glow]- seems to be Makar and/or Mëassa right off the bat. These two are the original rogues, enjoying discord while not wanting things to get "too messy." These two didn't want Melkor to be dealt with harshly, because if he were out of the picture everything would be nice and calm (for the most part). On the other hand, they also didn't want the world destroyed :} And they didn't like Tulkas very much, with his laughing while fighting and all. Guess it made them feel like he wasn't really trying and it was insulting to them :}
Ok, there we go :}
If there's a way to get this to be a topic in all of the general categories for the Rp games, that'd be great. Otherwise, Tell others to come take a look :} And don't forget to add on your games! :}
Take care :}
