Has anyone here read the Dune series by Frank Herbert? That series was actually what pointed me to the Lord of the Rings. On the book jacket, it said it was the Lord of the Rings of Sci-Fi. Once I finished the series, I was looking for something else to read, and picked up Dune again, and saw that.
Oh, and I would not reccommend Frank Herbert's other works - espically Hellstrom's Hive and the White Plauge. Those are two very, very sick, sick books.

Sci-fi is just boring though... 90% of the time...

I read the Dune series until the main guy died, then stopped. I like science fiction and reading political intrigue. Tells me to be straightforward or be tangled in our own webbing!

I actually just started reading Dune yesterday. My dad (who originally introduced me to The Hobbit and TLOTR) recommended it to me so I hope it is as the back of the book says: "nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings."

I read it in high school and once or twice after that... Good book & I always seem to catch the movie version on TV now and then.

I've only read the first one, which was plainly awesome. Grand scheme, well executed, and beautiful.

The original trilogy is great. It started to bog down after that. The writing never suffered. It just got tiresome (to this reader) with the author (and later his son) flogging the same ideas.
