And my other addition, for the time being, to this area, will be a thread about Mercedes Lackey.
She is the author of the Valdemar series(a HUGE series consisting of a number of trilogies based in various regions of the timeline of her world... and containing a vast array of characters, cultures and species) Her writings tend to be a little closer to the action end of the spectrum than Modesitt's or Rawn's yet she's still very good for character development.

Mercedes Lackey has a lot of books coming out soon. Recently she had The Outstretched Shadow (Obsidian Shadow book one) which I loved. I'm looking forward to the new one coming out soon.
Her Valdemar books are wonderful as well as her Chrome Circle books. I haven't read the Elemental Masters stories yet though.
Which Valdemar book is your favorite?

My personal favorite is probably Burning Brightly... but closely followed by all of the Last Herald Mage trilogy and all of the Arrows trilogy...

Lol, Mercedes Lackey is my third favorite author, and she is very good. I liked the Last Herald-Mage trilogy and Tarma-Kethry novels the best, and after that the Half-Blood chronicles. Her Diana Tregarde books are also pretty good, as well as "This Scepter'd Isle." Actually... I just like all of her books. ;D
Well... I've always thought that she focused a lot on character development and how they grew up, as well as on issues today, such as the gay-lesbian thing. She definitely encourages her readers to tolerate others who are different.

Great to see her name here - I myself absolutely love her style and her stories. Admittedly I only know Talia's and Vanyels tales, but I just love them. Besides Tolkien and yes, you guessed it .. Marion Zimmer Bradley these are my most loved books. Tolkien is and will always be my first love
