Suilannad! I am looking to read the Lord of the Rings books again, preferably in an all-in-one book. This illustrated hardback one struck my interest (illustrated by Alan Lee, published in 1991): www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Illustrated-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0395595118/Any thoughts on this book or other good all-in-one LotR books? The illustrations look like a nice bonus, especially with the maps. But after some researching online I've discovered that this one is free of some of the typographical errors of the more recent runs by other publishers. Thanks!

Haven't seen any replies in a few days. So, I went ahead and ordered this book.

Bah, I knew there was something I meant to reply to :}
I'm more for the 3-book editions personally, not just because that's the original release format, but also because it's easier for me to read reclining comfortably. It also makes flipping through for quotes easier, which I do often, especially during some of the Tolkien chats at the weekly meeting.

I have both versions. The all-in-one is handy if I'm sitting in one place, especially by my computer if I need to look something up. But it's heavy, and so it's more convenient to carry one of the three volumes at a time. Actually, I also have it on audio disk to listen to in the car (as well as the Silmarillion), and in a Kindle version, so I can read it on my phone.
The illustrated version would be a pleasure to have and read, but less practical perhaps for carrying around.
Take your choice--or several choices!

Thanks for sharing about it. Yup, not traveling with it so perhaps this will be a good edition. And I'm just reading it, not planning on using it for reference, so the sheer massive size of it shouldn't be a hindrance. Amazon is so slow for shipping, so I'll probably be getting it at the end of next week.

Sorry for the late reply. Whatever is easiest for you to read is best. I use the three-book version for ease of reference and reading comfort.
