This will be Everquest style, correct? As in MMORPG, 3D, all the bells and whistles?

yep, MMORPG, but better than Everquest, DaoC and even WoW combined! If you ask me why, just check the name of this board! Because it's Tolkien-based! DOH!

Naming problem definitely needs addressed. What sort of naming convention were you considering, Eonwe? Obscurity may not save us around all those fellow Middle-earth fans. Creativity while still referring to the name? Elatan's Dusksinger sounds safe enough, although it refers to his Amillo name, which he can have back. Hint hint. I started to sign onto the MEO board and backed off until I have a safe name that can stand wear (short). Varda won't do! We can't be obviously our guild Tolkien characters, but must be roundabout or use a name having to do with our guild names. This may be painful. Potential elements from Beren's Lore Book: elena (of the stars), lirin (I sing), lindo (singer), linde (singing), faina- (emit light), cala (of the light), calina (a light, usually adjective), -n or -nye (I) Thus Elenalirin, Calalirin, Cala, Elena, Fainan, Fainanye. Of those, I rather like Fainan, only one letter longer than Varda. Of course Cala has the advantage of only four letters. You guys have a preference or suggestions?

Well, on the Board you can have a Tolkien name, but from what I've read (it actually let me in one day to read it! :}) they may (meaning possibly, not guaranteed) have a name reservation as a pormotional to MEO where those with non-Tolkien specific (i.e. Varda) may get to have their name gauranteed. I considered taking up the name I bore before I entered the Guild (now you history buffs can go read the news archives :}), but at the risk of sounding too much like Gollum, it's "my own, my precious" and I think I'd rather keep that one unaffiliated.
Still, I have other options :} Cheating would be Calawë :} (Man of Light :}) Darn, now it sounds like a good idea,.. I better start my creative juices flowing :} Calafëa (Spirit of Light), Sulfëa (Spirit of Wind), Calasul (Wind of Light) There, creative juices going now :}
Easiest would probably be creating one that could go to our character, but not one from the books. Here we can get a little fun as only some of us really "need" to choose from the Elvish language. Dunadain and King's Men (Pharazon and the Black Numenoreans etc) could go with Adunaic instead, Dwarves with Kuzdul. Orcs and Nazgul could go with Black Speech.
Elena is a bad choice. It sounds like one of the names for Numenor. Calalirin is too hard to say :} Fainan sounds fairly lovely and is easy to say :}
Perhaps a special category on the Names Page for names we have ourselves created for our characters and their translations. Your thoughts Irmo? :}
Just putting a suffix after our guild name (Like aragornv or similar) will not work for MEO. We've got to be creative. Names should avoid any actual names from LotR as these will likely not be allowed.
The other option is to simply allow open creation of names. I think I prefer the first one though. Requires more thought.
Might be a good format for use in other MMORPGs as well, but that's another topic :}
Take care :} Eonwë

Personly I would prefer a thoughtout name but since it can be difficult I would let it stand open for everyone to use any language; his own ( in my case danish which would in this case be Dusksinger / Skumringssanger or Elatan / Starman-..father-..manof-..whatever of Atani or a true Tolkien flavoured one from any of his languages. One of my reasons is surely I have always been very fund of Dusksinger. Yes I know it for all of you refers to Amillo but it is more than that to me ;D Hell I might even go with Snowfox What really matters to me is the community so I could live with most names if I had to.

Hey Elatan! How about using Dusksinger! Sounds great to me. For that matter, so does Snowfox. We know you by both already, MEO will probably take either one, so go for it!

Well, names like "Dusksinger" and "Snowfox" sound alot better than "FatherofAtani" :} So if we could keep it "poetic" and make it sound like a nickname rather than a history it might work in English :} Generally I'd say no articles, prepositions etc in names. Nightwing better than wingsofnight, that kind of thing, but Fatheratani still doesn't work :}
Such a long name would eventually have someone abbreviating it for you, and "Skum" is not what you should be called :}
Take care :} Eonwë

In general I doubt MeO has considered all the names you find outside LotR. I would think Amillo, Measse, Linqil, perennially, Curufinwe and all those kinds would be ok. I tried to use some of the "main" names of the Valar in DaoC but couldnt even no one had taken those but there were no problems with alternative real names of the same chars. Linqil, Perennially, Amillo, Elatan and Araw worked just fine so my guess is it`would be only the well known names thats restricted.

Whatever names we use, I volunteer to post them on the Activity page under MEO, as I do for other games, if I know them. Keeping them updated can be nightmarish unless members help out.
The most helpful system might be to post our main and alternates in some special page for the MEO web page. We need to try to keep the names fairly appropriate for our main to help recognition, so it won't look so off-the-wall if we address the person accidentally or on purpose by his main name.

MEO names so far seem to be creative versions of our guild characters. Sounds good. Elatan is registered as Dusksinger, Eonwe as Auros. Guess I'll go ahead with Fainan and jump in.
