And they are waiting.
When Darkness Falls arrived in Euro it became a grand success. This is the story of one of our alliance attempts to kill the master beast Legion
...............................................................................
Rumors ran through Midgard. Rumors of an evil, worse than anything yet seen in Midgard, who roamed in the depths of the Falls. The Falls, a mythical dungeon, in where it was said, that evil had its offspring. From here the beast who haunted the innocent peoples, the wifes and children of all the three realms, came from. The legends told they moved out through hidden gates. Once the gates opened in one realm it was closed
and hidden at the two other realms.
It was from the Falls the rumors came. It was a natural behavior and a process in the apprenticehood for being recognized as a worthy warrior for many of the younger to attend the higher levels of the Falls and bring back items of their bravery.
But lately not a few brave warriors or skilled woman in healing came up from the deep and told of strange sounds and visions who seemed to come from the deep. Minor groups had went down to investigate but only few had returned, babbling insane about giants and demons, with grievous wounds which no skill of the learned could heal.
From the insane and studdering few survivors, yelling and talking nonsense, at least something could be derived. Long dark tunnels filled with horrid creatures, great treasures, a stairway winding down into the darkness and the name -
Legion.
The upper levels of the Falls became more and more dangerous, strange looking beasts with more mouth and teeth than body and awful manlike nightmares were seen lurking around, angels of darkness and death hoowered closer and closer to the intrance.
The minor creatures were trusted out of the Falls and assailed the small settlements in the wilderness and the nights in outer Midgard became feared. People remained inside their houses and did not open the doors for strangers save with a blade in the hand. The population decreased in the small towns and settlements as people moved closer or into the fenced and guarded larger towns.
The situation became critical, the large towns could not feed or house the increased population, sickness spread fast and uncontrolled. It had to be stopped before riots broke out.
At a council between the leading guilds in Midgard it was decided to assemble the most daugty fighters of the all the guilds and go down to either die or destroy this master evil.
Kallio, a great warrior and commander, was appointed leader of this daring task. Often had he directed the brave people of Midgard in battles down in the Falls which he knew well. Many a time had he faced the death down in the catacombs and warhardened as he was he knew how and when to draw back or move forward.
I felt secure and belived we would be lead to victory though I was afraid. Afraid of what might happen, what we might find and what we might unleash down there.
From the third, and relatively safe floor, we began to move down.
Water drippled from the walls and made the floor of the tunnels dangerus to walk. From dark pits, leading to nowhere, a foul smell of rotten flesh wavered as an ecco of forgotten pain. We walked through huge halls with carwen statues of demans. They seemed to follow us with their eyes, glowing red in the dark shadows.
At last we reached a long down-winding road. A chanting sound came from the deep below. This was the right way. Those who had returned to the surface of previous small expeditions had told of this sound and the winding road even they had never passed down there.
Somewhere, about 2/3 of the road down Kallio commanded a stop. At the left was an archway into a giant hall but it was guarded by terrifying knights of dead.
Tohmeh, the runemaster, laid down an area spell in the archway and the effect brought the knights to life and out of their slumper. I guessed they got pretty surprised when they rushed out and met a whole d**ned army welcomming them in the tunnel. They were immidiatly stunned and fast brought down. It must have felt like being smashed by an earthquake.
Now the gate was clear and we silently moved into the hall. Not many enemies were there and quitly, one by one, they died until only Legion, standing with his back to us were left. Then it happened. Legion slowly turned and with an evil look he pointed at us and out of hidden halls and secret doors swarmed the servants of Legion in.
Soon we were the flanked and I saw people fall. Gaugrim fell by an arrow which pierced his eye, Eoloff and Bordwine too in the first onslaught. The main force became divided from the left and right wings who had to turn to face the sudden attack from the sides and now the we, the main force stood against Legion alone with no support. Some few got caught by fear and tried to run but they did not get far and did not reach the archway.
As we now stood alone facing Legion our options were limited, we could attack him or turn to help aginst the incomming demons but would then have the Master Evil at our back. Kallio had to take a fast decision and of two choices he made the same as I would have done in his position. His choice was to charge Legion and hope we could get him down before the demons had penetrated and annihilated our hard fighting support wings behind us. If Legion died the control of the demons would fall too and then we maybe stood a chance to get out again alive.
Kallio raised his hand and when he let it fall we charged. I used my great twohanded axe and with all my strength I swung it towards the towering Legion and I felt it bite into his flesh. I had expected a gush of blod from the wound but to my surprize the wound seemed to close when I lifted the axe for another swing. Ten times I let the axe hit until the shaft and ten times the wound seemed to close behind it.
Then he began to sing an unearthly sound and move rythmecally. Dark vapours poured out of his hands and floated around in the air, wrapping around us. Then a lash like of a whip, the singing of electric energy unleashed and I felt a growing burning pain across the chest.
As my pain grew my legs began to tremble and the strength of my arms weakened. My head became dizzy, the room spinning for my eyes, I had to crawl on hands and knees to the closest wall to avoid the clamour of the battle and strokes of blades missing their target.
As I lay against the wall half unconsious seeing visions and thinking of my God I suddenly heard a clear voice asking if I were ok. I forced my eyes up and saw Tinyliza, an old friend from way back in my childhood. Now she was a skilled shaman, learned in the skills of calling upon Gods of life.
”No Tinyliza I am not well, in fact I think this is the end for me and for many of our bravest fighters. I cannot feel my legs and my chest is burning in fire. Legion and his demons have proven to strong I am afraid”
” Do not give up life yet, maybe the battle is lost but have faith in the Gods and, if I may say so, me” Tinyliza said with a smile. She examined, with a consentrated look in her eyes, my wounds for a while. Then she drew from her pockets a phial with clear liquid and some grey liniment.
”Drink this and rub the liniment into the wounds even it will hurt” she commanded ”and if I get out of here alive come see me later” Then she turned to another lifeless body on the floor.
I did as I were told. When I swallowed the liquid I instantly felt refreashed and the strength returning. The fog infront of my eyes lifted and I could see clearly again. It was not a pleasent sight. I saw many friends lying on the floor, blodsheated with clowen helms and shields, broken axes and swords. Some were crying in pain trying to crawl away with broken limbs, some were missing an arm or a leg and some were raving and staggering around in madness. Among all this healers and shamans desperately tried to comfort and help those they deemed helpable.
I realized I had been extreemely lucky but now I had to find my way out before more demons came in. Some few groups of warriors still stood against the tide to protect the healers in their work but they were ever harder pressed and were slowly forced back.
Well through the archway I joined up with Thagred, Worlon, Bazza and some others I do not recall now and we began to move up protected by some of the unharmed warriors while the runemasters laid down a barrier of dark claods and energy across the outer archway behind us.
The journey back to the upper floors is still unclear to me and I do not remember much of it save the wrath and fear that seemed to sneak into every bone from the depth below.
Our attempt to deal with the threat in the deepest of the catacomps of the Falls ended as a disaster. We did not knew what we were up to. Many a good man or woman met untimely their God down there but yet it could have been worse if it was not for the healers and shamans of our land.
They deserve our eternally praise for their bravery that night.
