Now before you all decide to stone me let me just say that this is not as bad as it looks. I first read these books a couple of years before the movies were even thought about so please dont accuse me of being one of those types.
First i have to admit that while the begining of the series i.e. the first two books are indeed for the young reader, i'd say between 12 and 99, they are still very enjoyable books and are worth the reading. However as she progresses to the third and subsequent books Rowlings' writing shows very obviuos signs of maturity as the books become darker and more sinister.
I anxiously await the sixth book in the series and fervently hope that she will continue the series even after Harry has left Hogwarts.
For all of those who say that the series is childish or it is intended for children, i say, read them then tell me what ever you wish.
And if you dont want to buy em or check them out of a library then get a hold of me and i might let you borrow mine. Big emphasiz on MIGHT.
Very well let the stoning commence.
Enjoy
Thorin

I've read them too, Thorin. Meriadoc-V got me started, or I might not have given them a chance. It was interesting to see the way the movies interpreted them and they've spawned an insane amount of fanfic, of which I've read almost none. The numbers show that only LotR is second to the amount (a well-nigh unreadable number), which suggests you and I aren't the only at least semi-literate people reading HP.

I also read Harry Potter. very good books. very good. the first few i kind of read as a whim, and they amused me if nothing else... books 4 and 5 though...as Harry becomes mature so do her books. Great stuff really it is. Anyone wanna swap predictions about the outcomes of the series?

personally i think Harry will die and Ron will become the Auror. also i believe Dumbledore will have known all along that Harry has to die, because if you recall, Harry didnt actually hear the whole prophecy, he only got what Dumbledore told him. I think there may be more to it. Rowling also said her main theme in the books was death so... ps, just a suspicion of mine, i think Snape will die saving Harry

Rowling seems to kill at least one likable person per book, definitely a death theme running there. A person can die and still win so, if Harry were to die versus Voldemort, Harry could win by stopping the tide of Death-eaters by wiping out their leader. I'd rather he lived and a new story line started with him as an adult. It looks as if Hermione and Ron are a definite item. Suppose one of them might become the head of Hogwart's eventually? It seems to be the seat of the good guy's intrigue.
