The Outlander Series
The Story:
Claire Randall, a young American military nurse, gets lost in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness where some standing stones prove as portal through time that transport her directly into the path of the Jacobite fugitive, Jamie Fraser. She learns to adjust to the strange culture and romance blooms despite political and social intrigues (as the marriage is not quite voluntarily) , skirmishes and plight of neighbours. In the midst of that Claire tries to find a way back which she eventually manages as she becomes aware of other time travellers. As Claire finds her feet in 18th century Scotland she eventually returns to her own time for the sake of Jamie's daughter Brianna to give her a future in relative safety. But one can imagine that Jamie's daughter can't leave it at that, as Claire reveals to her at her 20th birthday who (and when) her father really was (and not Claire's husband Frank .. ).
Enough to make you curios ? It is a series of 8 Novels that span from 1745 into the late 1800s, from the Scottish Highlands through the Carribean into the turbulent North America of late 18th and early 19th century. As the story deals with war and medical treatment it contains some fairly graphic scenes, also where the romantic scenes are concerned they are not for a sensitive mind - just a word of warning there, but saying that, they are all written in with a poetic brilliance that doesn't make them repellent in any way. Highly recommended by me and if you want to know more about the Gaelic culture (back 200 years ago .. but still some of it survives ) or just have a good read, go ahead. But careful .. they are addictive.
List of Novels in order:
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone
Written in my own Hearts blood
Go tell the bees that I am gone (currently in production)
