Lord of the Rings Trivia Contest!
« Thread Started on May 21, 2006, 6:17pm »

Greetings one and all!

I am announcing a Trivia contest available to all Members of the Valar Guild with a character in the official Guild branch on Lothar!

The winners of this trivia will be able to choose which of the characters he or she has in the Valar Guild Lothar branch will receive the prize. Prizes will be awarded from the Guild Bank and will be as appropriate for the character as possible.

Rewards to choose from may include:
An Item
Materials for your profession
Profession patterns

In addition, I will offer my services as either a Blacksmith or an Alchemist to the first place winner to make any 1 item I am capable of making.

Any member of the Valar Guild may send in answers to the Tolkien trivia; however, only those with a character in the Guild branch will be able to collect a prize as described above. I will keep track of those who do and record winners of that group for bragging rights :} Members of any honor may participate in this test of Tolkien knowledge for the chance to win prizes.

All answers must of course be off the top of your head, as this is a test of knowledge.

Now that the trivia has ended, here are the winners:

Lothar:
First Place: Varda
Second Place: Oromë
Third Place: Arwen

Non-Lothar
First Place: Finrod
Second Place: Menelvagor

Overall:
First Place: Varda
Second Place: Oromë
Third Place: Finrod

I did give partial credit for answers that had some parts correct, which made for some interesting math. Winners in the WoW Lothar branch may claim their prizes at their earliest convenience. Winners outside the WoW Lothar branch may begin bragging at their earliest convenience :}

Here are the answers to the trivia:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1.) Shadowfax belongs to a noble line of horses. What is this line called?
A: Mearas

2.) Who was it that forsaw the death of the Witch-King?
A: Glorfindel

3.) Before entering Shelob’s Lair, Gollum had one last chance where he might’ve turned from evil. What happened to ruin this chance?
A: Sam saw him leaning over Frodo and was immediately suspicious. Sam snapped at Gollum, destroying finally any chance of Gollum’s repentance.

4.) What were the fates of the seven Palantiri?
A: The stone of Minas Tirith remained with Denethor’s body. It could no longer be used to see anything but Denethor’s burning hands unless someone had the strength of will to pull it from that vision. The Stone of Orthanc was kept and used by Aragorn and likely his heirs. The stone of Minas Ithil was lost in the destruction of the Barad Dur. The stone of Tol Elostirion was taken aboard the last ship and went to Aman with the keepers of the Three Rings. The stone of Osgiliath was lost in the Anduin when the city was burned during the kinstrife. The stones of Annuminas and Amon Sul were lost in a shipwreck in the Bay of Forochel during the Long Winter. Arvedui, last king of Arthedain also died in the shipwreck.

5.) How did Gandalf first discover Sam was listening to the conversation between him and Frodo?
A: The sound of Sam trimming outside the house could no longer be heard.

6.) What name does Eowyn ride to Minas Tirith under?
A: Dernhelm

7.) What did Sam make mention of in his verse about Gandalf in Lothlorien?
A: Gandalf’s fireworks.

8.) Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli sang as they watched Boromir’s body drift down the Anduin. What wind was sung of by each of the Three Hunters? Was any wind left unsung of and why?
A: Aragorn sang of the West and North winds. Legolas sang of the South wind. The East wind was left for Gimli, but he would not sing of it, as no one asks the East Wind for news (East being the direction of Mordor).

9.) What year in Shire Reckoning was known as the Year of Plenty?
A: 1420

10.) How many times is the word “Valar” used in LotR?
A: 3 times: The Rangers of Ithilien say “May the Valar turn them(the Mumakil) aside!”; The Charge of the Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields was likened to “Oromë the great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.”; Aragorn’s coronation, “Now come the days of the King, and may they be blessed while the thrones of the Valar endure!”

11.) As Strider and the Hobbits leave Bree, Bill Ferny comes out to jeer them. What does Sam do?
A:Throws an apple at him.

12.) Name 3 gifts Bilbo left for Frodo to give to relatives.
A: Any three of: An umbrella, a wastepaper basket, a gold pen and ink bottle, a round convex mirror, a bookcase, a case of silver sthingys

13.) Name three Ents besides Treebeard and Quickbeam.
A: Beechbone, Finglas/Leaflock, Fladrif/Skinbark, Fimbrethil/Wandlimb (though technically an entwife, she is of the same race and I will accept it).

14.) Where was Frodo first headed after leaving Bag End?
A: Crickhollow

15.) What does the Ring inscription say in the Black Speech (meaning, don’t translate)?
A: Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul (no points lost for spelling)

16.) When Gandalf described his meeting and capture by Saruman to the Council, he mentions one peculiar part of Saruman’s attire as Gandalf meets him. What is this?
A: As Saruman comes down the stairs of Isengard to meet Gandalf, Gandalf notices Saruman “wore a ring on his finger.”

17.) What was something strange the Hobbits noticed about the Dark Riders as they hid from one?
A: The Dark Rider seemed to “smell” for them.

18.) What was Treebeard’s first impression of Merry and Pippin?
A: They were orcs.

19.) Who forged the sword Anduril?
A: Telchar of Nogrod, the same Dwarf who forged Angrist, the dagger Beren used to pry a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth. (I will also take as an answer the Elven smiths of Rivendell, since technically it was Narsil forged by Telchar, and Narsil re-forged by the Elven smiths was Anduril.)

20.) What rumour began to stir as Frodo was giving out the gifts Bilbo had instructed him to give out?
A: The whole estate was being given away for free.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I hope to do many more of these, so you all better brush up on your Tolkien :}

Take care :}
